Used Oil Analysis Report Interpretation: Training Class is Essential

Among the many, many benefits of oil analysis training, is mastery of accurate and efficient report interpretation. To that end, the Eurofins TestOil Comprehensive class includes training on “How to Read a Report in Two Minutes or Less”.

Eurofins TestOil Training Business Unit Manager Tim Skully explains, “In this class section we go in depth on everything encountered on a report coming back from a lab and how to interpret those reports accurately yet quickly. Using real life examples of reports from our lab we show participants how to spot anomalies and then interpret potential issues causing those anomalies.”

The true power of oil analysis is the ability to interpret report data. While the Eurofins TestOil lab does its best to make interpretation as easy as possible, lab analysts will never have the insight of those familiar with the machinery and plant conditions.

“A person with intimate knowledge of the machinery and environment will have a better idea of what has caused an issue indicated in the report,” Tim says. “For instance, say suddenly the report shows a dramatic increase in additives that should not be present, a person with knowledge of the machinery and plant would know if a top-up was performed recently and perhaps the wrong fluid was used.  As a lab we can infer that something like that has happened, but the true power lies with those that have access to information the lab does not.”
Some oil analysis customers, take the time to thoroughly read reports, others just scan their reports, and others (believe it or not) set the reports aside and don’t read them at all.

“An oil analysis program is designed to save money and time by eliminating unnecessary maintenance,” Tim advises. “Incorrectly interpreting reports could lead to either chasing problems that aren’t really there or not finding the root cause and continuously pursuing the same elusive issue. Not interpreting reports at all could lead to a ‘run to failure’ maintenance strategy, which would defeat the purpose of oil analysis.”
The Eurofins TestOil Comprehensive class isn’t the only option available for learning how to interpret reports.  A private, customized class that includes this training is just what some companies need.

“The Comprehensive class covers far more and is great for people that want to gain knowledge in lubrication fundamentals and best practices,” Tim says. “But if that is not necessary or if people just want a refresher on report interpretation, we can provide a custom class with just the content they need most.” He adds that in a private class on report interpretation, instructors have the ability to utilize the company’s specific reports for the class.

Eurofins TestOil is offering 2023 Comprehensive classes Nov. 7-9 in Anaheim, CA; and Dec. 5-7 in Kansas City.  Check this page regularly for the schedule updates.
