Diesel generator longevity is determined by more than operating hours. Fluid condition can have a significant impact on fuel-system components, cooling-system surfaces and ultimately the long-term reliability of the engine.
Diesel stored for extended periods can accumulate water and sediment, undergo oxidation and other aging-related changes, and—when free water is present—develop conditions that support microbial growth. These conditions can increase stress on filtration and fuel-delivery systems and contribute to deposits, injector problems and inefficient combustion. It’s important to note that running the generator periodically does not establish that the fuel feeding it is adequate for reliable operation.
Coolant chemistry also changes with time. Corrosion inhibitors are depleted, contaminants can enter the system, and improper glycol concentration or changes in pH can compromise protection. These conditions can contribute to corrosion, scale, cavitation, and reduced heat-transfer efficiency. The resulting damage may develop gradually, making fluid analysis particularly valuable as an early-warning tool. A well-designed testing program can provide actionable information about:
