Lubricant Compatibility Testing

Is Your New Lubricant Compatible with Your Current Lubricant?

This is an increasingly popular question this year due to the pandemic. Many lubricant suppliers have had difficulties getting their normal inventory due to various complications.

The first step whenever you change oil types or oil suppliers, you should always get a compatibility test done. Though many lubricants may be deemed equivalent or comparable, that does not mean they are compatible.

Lubricant Compatibility Analysis with TestOil

We follow the ASTM D 7155 Standard Practice for Evaluating Compatibility of Mixtures of Turbine Lubricating Oils. We offer the standard testing, but there are different tiers to the testing that you can choose for more in-depth testing.

No matter what level of testing you decide to go through with, they all start the same with the heating and cooling process. We mix a certain percentage of the two oils, heat them, and let them cool to see if there are any obvious issues such as cloudiness or sediment.

We do recommend to our customer that you do proceed with the more in-depth levels of testing as the more test you run, the better we can determine if they two oils are, in fact, compatible.
